Amazing Gift

Yesterday was another Lane family reunion in Marion, South Carolina. Of course it's always fun and a great time seeing my family, but this year there was something extra special about our reunion. One of my cousins came up to me towards the beginning and said that she had something for me and that I was not to leave before getting it from her. She caught me as I was standing outside towards the end of the reunion and handed me a old cardboard photo frame folder. Inside it she had added some newspaper obituaries, some memorial service cards, and a picture of her parents. There was one last thing that was what made this folder so special. It was a large 8 x 10 colorized photo of my grandmother, Rhodees Lane. This was the same picture that my father carried in his wallet for as long as I can remember. As far as I know the wallet sized black-and-white picture that he had of this was the only one we had or that I had ever seen. I will tell you that I got very emotional and teary-eyed looking at what has always been one of my favorite pictures of my grandmother. I was so thrilled that my cousin found it and thought of me! This was such a special gift and I am overwhelmed with emotions at having it!

Lane Family Losses

Over the past two weeks the Lane family has lost three family members! It is very hard to think of these family members that have gone on ahead and that we will be separated for a time. Even harder for the children and family who lost both father and mother within 2 weeks.

William Clinton "Slim" Burns

This is a great picture I found of William Clinton Burns. His nickname was Slim, but he was also Pa to his grandkids. He worked at Oak Ridge and I imagine this is out at the flat-tops.

Lanes Gather Again!

Our Lane family gathered for another Lane Family Reunion last week! Our numbers were slightly down, but we had several family members that have not been to a reunion in quite some time! I missed several family members that are normally there and some of the new family members I have yet to meet. Looking forward to next year! Same Saturday, same time next year!

Unknown Part 20

This picture is an unknown tin type that belonged to my father's family. It does remind me of Thomas Rees Price, but there is no markings on this to help with his identity. I would love for anyone that might be able to help me to narrow his identity down.

Lane Reunion 2012

This past weekend we had our 46th annual Lane family reunion. It was a great time with at least 90 family members in attendance! I was thrilled to meet several family members that I do not remember ever meeting before. I also had the chance to learn more about some of those unknown people in my grandmother, Rhodees Lane Orr's, photo album. My cousin, Barbara, recognized some of her mother's family. I have gone back to those pictures I posted here and put updates with the names she shared with me. The reunion was slightly bittersweet since my father was not there. He would have been thrilled with seeing so many family members and some he had not seen in so long. My cousin, Barbara, also brought me a picture of my father from when he was a teenager. I was so happy to see that and to catch a glimpse of him as a younger man.

Trip To Jonesville

My husband surprised me yesterday with a stop in Jonesville, VA. I had found out roughly where the cemetery was where my great-great-grandparents, James and Martha "Pattie" (Vermillion) Orr, are buried and I was eager to see if we could find it. It was within the measurements that were always given in relation to a special tree that had been in front of the family's house. My father had always told me that the cemetery was behind the house, but in fact it is to the side of the house. I was able to finally see the graves of my great-great-grandparents!

Elizabeth Price

I found information on another sister of my great-great-grandfather, Thomas Rees Price. I might add that we had copies from a family Bible that mentioned all of the children (minus the last born) of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Jones) Price. So I had names and birth dates, but there were no marriage or death dates. I got a e-mail from Ancestry about Pennsylvania records online so I went and looked for my family. I found the marriage records for two of the other siblings in Schuylkill County, PA where the family lived for most of the time they were in PA. I did look at records in Lehigh County where they lived for a short time before moving to Knoxville, TN. That is when I found information on the other sister of Thomas's. She is child number six and the last child that I had no further information on after birth and one census with her family. When I had seen a copy of Eliabeth (Jones) Price's will it listed two witnesses as Thomas B Glick and Lizzie P Glick. The record at Ancestry said that Thomas B Glick married Elizabeth Price (dau. of the late Jonathan P.)! Then I found census for the Glick's and Lizzie's age matches my Elizabeth Price! So very excited! AS far as I can see they had no children, but I would love to see if there is a picture of her anywhere!

Rees Price

I finally got a little help with information with regards to the cemetery where my earliest ancestor in my Price family is buried. Rees Price and his wife, Ann, were buried in the Welsh Cemetery in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Evediently the cemetery was moved in the 1960's. I still do not have full details, but I learned of a plaque that listed those buried in the cemetery. Here is a picture of the plaque with my ancestors listed under burials.

I have not posted much recently due to computer problems. All my genealogy information and pictures are no longer on my computer and I am still trying to adjust. I hope that I will get reorganized soon so I can continue to share about my family.

Bivens Family

I have this picture that has several of the Bivens brothers. I was told that my grandfather, Mose Bivens, is the second from the back and his father, Phillip Marion Bivens, is the fourth from the back. Those are the ones I know for certain. I have guesses on the three other boys, but I would love any help in positively identifying these family members. If I had to guess I would say the order is Henry Bivens, Mose Bivens, Charlie Bivens, Phillip Marion Bivens Sr., and Grover Bivens. I was told that the others in front were maybe a wife to one of the brothers and possible children.

Unknowns Part 16

This little girl is in several pictures in the photo album that belonged to Joe Price. I am not sure who she is, but she does seem to favor several of our family members. These pictures were taken in Atlantic City, NJ probably between 1900-1915.

Unknowns Part 15 (Updated!)

This is another picture from the album of my grandmother, Rhodees Lane. The woman on the right looks similar to Lois McKay. I am not sure who they are and would love it someone could tell me who they are.

(Update - 30 Jul 2012. My cousin, Barbara, told me that this is her mother, Connie Person Lane, on the right, and her aunt, Frances Mushlitt who is on the left. This was possibly taken on Connie's wedding day.)

Historian

My husband tends to make fun of my Lane family reunions. They are as organized as a Baptist Church business meeting! We have officers and a small business meeting at each reunion. This year after the reunion my cousin opened a Pandora's box for me. He gave me the two family scrapbooks and asked me to update them! There are pictures of my great-grandparents and most of their children and respective spouses. Included are some history of the family, pictures of reunions past, and updates on family members. So I am preparing to update these and I hope I can do a good job. I might post pictures of some of my progress.

Unknown Part 14

This is a picture that was taken in the yard at James Wesley Orr's house in Jonesville, VA. It was taken at the same time as a picture of James I have. I am not sure when they were taken. It does seem like the man in the middle is my great-grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Orr, though I am not sure. I am not sure who the children are. If you can help me identify them I would be thrilled!

The Orr's Jonesville House

This is a picture that I took several years ago when I traveled to Jonesville, Virginia. This is the area where my Orr family lived for many years. The house is one that my great-great-grandfather, James Wesley Orr, built after the Civil War. The family sold the house in the early 1940's. As far as I know it is still standing.

Mysterious Jenkins Family

My great-grandmother, Martha Jane (Jenkins) Bivens creates a huge brick wall for our family. As far as I have heard from most relatives no one knows anything about who her parents were or pretty much anything about the family. I would LOVE any help in learning more about her family! Here is the link to my earlier post about Martha and her husband, Phillip Marion Bivens, and their children (link).

Unknowns Part 11

In this picture there are three women. Right to left are Mary Price, Annie Price and unknown. I am not sure what the deal is with the flower that Mary has. Below is another picture with Annie Price and a lady I was told is Mary Post. Mary Post has the same flower. Does anyone know what this meant or was for?

This picture is of the Shelton and Orr families. Mary Richards Shelton is the aunt of my great-grandmother, Mary Price Orr. From left to right the people are: unknown man, Mary Price Orr, Benjamin Orr, Mary Richards Shelton, Ann Shelton, Asa Shelton. The two young boys are Price and James Orr. The unknown man does favor the sons of Asa and Mary Shelton and could possibly be either William or Joseph.
